M4 Accreditation as a driver for healthcare quality improvement

Format: Interactive teaching and discussion

This course will outline the accreditation and quality improvement movement, touching on figures such as Codman, Deming, and Juran and their related theories. We will discuss how the major accreditation systems have used these theories to develop various systems, each with different impacts on the health care systems that adopt them. The public policy considerations of developing and sustaining a national or regional accreditation body will be discussed, including lessons learned and key success factors. The course will end with a discussion of innovations inaccreditation which have been implemented in various systems around the world.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the theoretical underpinnings of the modern accreditation movement
  • Discuss major public policy considerations in developing and sustaining a national or regional accreditation programme
  • Describe the role of accreditation and performance measurement in stimulating continuous improvement in accredited healthcare organisations
