A10 Shared decision-making: theoretical frameworks and implementation of patient decision support tools

Content level: General      Style: Debate/Discussion

Scientific approaches to investigate the effects of shared decision making, specifically with a focus on patient decision support, have been developed and evaluated in the past decade, but this knowledge has not been widely translated into routine health care. As well as describing the potential of these approaches (in effectiveness, effects on quality improvement, and patient
satisfaction) we will outline the underlying theories and share possible ways of selecting and structuring information to be included in decision support tools and different software approaches. We will also present examples of implementing decision support technologies (for low back pain, depression, amniocentesis).

After this session you will be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical frameworks underlying patient decision support tools
  • Understand ways of selecting and structuring information to be included in decision support tools
  • Discuss the advantages and limitations of implementing decision support tools into routine care
