B3 Patient safety results from 24 hospitals: what evidence is needed for scale up?

Content level: Masterclass      Interactive

The Health Foundation’s Safer Patients Initiative aimed to reduce adverse events in first 4, then 20 more hospitals by offering them the opportunity to access a support programme focused on changes in senior leadership engagement, perioperative care, general wards, intensive care and medicines reconciliation. The results are impressive, and this session will invite participants to consider what would convince them to act to scale up or spread these activities drawing on their own experiences. A panel will then present the challenges for assessing success based on the perspectives of their work on the Safer Patients Initiative – as investor, researcher and policymaker – and invite comments from participants.

After this session you will be able to:

  • Consider the types of information about the interventions needed by participants, those who might invest, and those who might  evaluate patient safety programmes
  • Evaluate some of the evidence about the success of the Safer Patients Initiative
  • Consider the risks and benefit of acting to spread these types of changes
