The International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare

Jointly organised by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and BMJ, the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare has been inspiring innovation and improvement in health and care since 1996.

As one of the largest international conferences focused on driving health and care quality improvement and patient safety, the International Forum connects health and care professionals, carers, service users and leaders from all parts of the world. Attendees share learning and innovative ideas, and discuss effective approaches to quality and safety improvement.

Now postponed to 20-22 June 2022, the International Forum in Gothenburg will focus on the key themes in health and care in Europe, while bringing in perspectives and knowledge from around the world. Read more about the Gothenburg programme.

Join the quality improvement movement

Using our combined expertise and passion, IHI and BMJ bring you one of the largest international conferences focused on improving outcomes for patients and communities through quality improvement.

Over 2,300 attendees in Gothenburg came together in person for the first time since 2019 to celebrate the power of in-person collaboration, design innovative ways to transform our health and care systems and rebuild connections as well as forge new ones.

Attending an International Forum gives you the opportunity to:

  • Get re-energised, inspired and ready to tackle the challenges ahead of you
  • Embrace new ideas and perspectives to accelerate your progress
  • Get the latest research into quality and safety improvement
  • Gain practical knowledge on using improvement methods
  • Connect with like-minded colleagues to share experiences and improvement approaches, learn from innovative projects, and start collaborations

The next International Forum in Europe will be in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 15-17 May 2023.

Our return to an in-person international conference

We are excited to be returning to Gothenburg for our first in-person conference since 2019. This will also be our first return to Sweden since 2016 when we welcomed over 3,000 attendees from around the world.

The programme will continue key discussions about the delivery of equitable and safer care, and showcase the most innovative improvement and patient safety initiatives from Europe and beyond.

As the global pandemic is still an unprecedented challenge in many countries around the world, we continue to work with the conference venue and follow advice from the relevant governments and authorities to ensure that the conference is delivered safely for everyone involved. We remain committed to delivering a safe experience to all participants, staff and the wider community.

We have also finalised our plans to offer some of the conference content virtually. Those who can’t join us in person in Gothenburg now can enjoy an online programme of 15 sessions, streamed live from Gothenburg. Read more about our online attendance package (please note that registration for online attendance is now closed).

You can reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns about your attendance. You can also read an overview of all the safety measures we will have in place in Gothenburg.
