R12: Working with parents to improve safety
The Situation for Awareness for Everyone, SAFE, a two year programme aimed to improve safety of children on 28 hospital sites in England. Key to the intervention was the use of the huddle. Sites involved parents and children in developing safe and effective ways to be able to anticipate issues before they occurred. This interactive session will describe the process followed, the methods used, how parents were involved and provide the results in terms of culture change and outcomes for children. Parent reported outcomes were a key measurement in ensuring that children were safer from both provider and families’ perspectives.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand how to involve patients and their families in patient safety activities
- Understand the value of real time anticipation of safety issues
