PART ONE – Mental health service users utilising QI in their personal recovery journey



  1. Presentation by a service user of how they used QI involvement and methods to aid recovery in their mental health journey

  2. Share co-produced QI project on increasing meaningful and authentic service user involvement in QI projects, highlighting how service users in partnership with people participation and QI department developed their change theory using a driver diagram ensuring focus on what matters to them

  3. Discuss ‘tokenistic’ involvement and how attendees can constructively challenge and improve authenticity in ensuring improvement work not only involves service users but can be initiated and led by them


After this session, participants will be able to: 



  • Understand how service users and carers have used quality improvement to support their personal recovery 

  • Identify the driving forces and restraining factors to service users and carers instigating and leading improvement in the organisation where they receive services

  • Share ideas about how to constructively challenge ‘tokenistic’ involvement in their organisation

PART TWO – Opening new leadership horizons: cross-cultural QI leadership journeys across different health systems


Cross-cultural learning is an essential skill in QI and healthcare change leadership to improve access to high-quality healthcare that is respectful of and responsive to the needs of diverse patients and for healthcare leaders to be open to learning from different healthcare settings.


Join two experienced QI change leaders as they share their intentional leadership learning journeys in Sweden and South Africa. Learn about the leadership attribute of ‘boundarylessness’ and the seven essential features needed to create meaningful and actionable cross-cultural change leadership engagement across different health systems so you can initiate and design your own deep dive learning experience.


After this session, participants will be able to: 



  • Understand the benefits and value of an intentional cross cultural learning journey across different health systems

  • Learn about the essential features and potential pitfalls for creating a high value experience for each QI leader

  • Use the framework provided to Initiate and design a high value actionable cross-cultural learning journey across different health systems
