Pieter Van Dam

Associate Professor Pieter Van Dam is the Academic Lead for Quality & Safety and Program Director for Advanced Practice at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He also serves as a Board Director and Deputy Chair of Health Consumers Tasmania. Pieter has an extensive clinical and educational background in nursing and healthcare, and he has held senior roles as a clinician and manager in the acute healthcare sector. His work is centred on health service improvement, leadership development, and the application of implementation science in clinical settings. He earned his PhD in Leadership Development in 2015.
He collaborates extensively with healthcare providers across Australia and internationally, leading initiatives that enhance healthcare delivery through co-design and rigorous evaluation methods. His research focuses on health system performance—including program effectiveness—leadership development, and health service improvement. Pieter co-leads the Tasmanian Design for a Patient Journey Research Group, which aims to improve patient flow from a person-centred perspective. To date, he has produced 98 research outputs, including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference publications.
