Stream: Tech Innovation
Session format: Workshop
Part 1 - Quantifying UX's impact in Value-Based Healthcare: cross-industry co-design lessons from Medtech and eMobility
This presentation explores the quantifiable impact of User Experience (UX) on Value-based Healthcare (VBHC), a critical paradigm shifting focus from service volume to patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness, which drives innovation in the provision of the service. Drawing cross-industry lessons from the Medtech and eMobility sectors, we illuminate how their mature approaches to user-centered design and measurable efficacy can be directly applied to VBHC. We argue that robust UX strategies, traditionally used to enhance device usability and optimize smart mobility solutions, are pivotal in improving and innovating patient engagement, streamlining care pathways, and ultimately reducing healthcare costs while elevating quality. By examining specific examples and methodologies from these adjacent industries, this presentation provides a framework for healthcare stakeholders to measure and demonstrate the tangible return on investment (ROI) of UX initiatives in achieving VBHC's core objectives.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify key methods and metrics for quantifying the impact of UX on patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness within Value-based Healthcare settings.
- Translate and apply specific user-centered design principles and measurement strategies from the Medtech and Mobility industries to their own Value-based Healthcare initiatives.
- Articulate the strategic role of UX in achieving Value-based Healthcare goals, beyond traditional usability improvements.
- Develop a foundational understanding of how to make a business case for UX investment by demonstrating its measurable contribution to healthcare value.

Part 2 - Reducing unwarranted variation in radiology: a national initiative to promote value-based imaging in Norway
The Regional Health Authorities were commissioned by the Ministry of Health to map national consumption and variation in radiology services, and to implement measures to reduce overuse. In this presentation, I will share several key findings related to outpatient activity and the diagnostic workup of hospitalized patients in our hospitals, which highlight significant variation in the use of low-value radiological services across the country.
The final part of the presentation will focus on the national measures being implemented, including concrete action plans aimed at reducing radiology overuse in Norway.
After this session, participants will:
- Gain deeper insight into the key drivers contributing to overuse and overactivity in radiology services.
- Acquire knowledge about the extent of overuse, particularly in low-value radiological services, and how widespread it is.
- Gain an understanding of their role as healthcare professionals in helping to reduce unnecessary use of radiology services.
