Jonathan Benn

Jonathan Benn is Associate Professor in Healthcare Quality and Safety at the University of Leeds, UK and research theme lead for Safety Intelligence within the Yorkshire and Humber Patient Safety Research Collaboration, supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. With over 20 years’ experience as a patient safety researcher and educator, he has applied theory and methods from fields such as human factors, organisational psychology, safety science and implementation science, to address emerging challenges across diverse health service areas. His work has addressed specific topics in anaesthesia, prehospital care, medication safety, risk management systems, workforce issues, digital health and large-scale systems change, amongst others. He has published extensively using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including evidence-synthesis and rigorous mixed-method evaluations of improvement programmes. Jonathan has a PhD in Human Factors and was previously a Lecturer in Quality Improvement at Imperial College London, where he taught on a range of healthcare quality and safety topics for students and healthcare professionals.
