Academic metrics have provided us with a robust view of how research is performing, and publishing research in a journal with an impressive impact factor (IF) was (and still is) a career milestone. Metrics like the IF don’t necessarily reflect a real-world impact, especially in healthcare. What even is real-world impact?

In this session we will examine different viewpoints of real-world impact and what impact means in the world of Quality and Safety. We will take examples from academic citation impact as well and looking at the real-world impact these types of journals have had looking at influence in policy, clinical guidance and clinical decision support.

As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the life of an article after publication, this session is a good follow-up to the “Tips for Getting Published Session” (Thursday, 11:00). Together they give an overview of the full publication cycle.

  • Understand the impact a research article can have – in policy, clinical guidance and clinical decision support.

  • Learn from experts in the field as they discuss their research and its journey from research to practice.
