Sustainability in Singapore 2025

Sustainability is important to us.

To better understand our impact on the environment and make effective changes, we continue to measure our event carbon footprint and identify practical ways to reduce it further.

Venue - Sustainability Measures

A modernisation programme has been carried out at Suntec increasing sustainability across three areas:

1. Energy and Water Conservation
2. Minimising Waste Production and Maximising Recycling
3. Proactive Optimisation of Resources

Key facts:

✅ Suntec collects and recycles almost 8,000 litres of cooking oil per year into biodiesel fuel.
✅ Induction cooking is the most energy-efficient way of cooking, nearly 20% more efficient than any other electric cooktop and twice as efficient as cooking with gas.
✅ Suntec’s LED lights are 80% more energy efficient than traditional halogen lights. This represents savings of 1.46 million kWh annually, which is equivalent to powering 470 HDB flats for a year.
✅ All power points have local fuses to prevent electrical trips.
✅ All escalators are on power-saving mode.
✅ Suntec’s toilets are installed with water-saving devices for flushes.

Community support:

Suntec Singapore supports various charities and non-profit organisations across Singapore. As their organisation grows, they believe they must continue to contribute economically and socially back to the community. Suntec Singapore supports the Yellow Ribbon Project, Tana River Life Foundation, The Purple Parade, Brainy Car Rally, Toy Buffet, Intercultural Theatre Institute and NS50: From My Generation to Yours – Art Exhibition.

Travel and Accommodation

Event staff

✅ UK-based BMJ Events team will be required to prioritise booking with one of the most sustainable airlines.

✅ We will review the sustainability initiatives at local hotels before confirming a block booking for our staff.

Experience Days and Social Event

✅ We will prioritise public transport or walking where possible to all our experience days and social event venue.

Catering

✅ Suntec Singapore’s energy conservation efforts focus on climate control, lighting and cooking by using the latest energy-efficient technology such as LED lighting, induction cookers, and electronic ovens.

✅ Suntec’s processes and procedures have been engineered to minimise the production of physical waste. This is particularly important for the kitchens where they use a combination of techniques to keep food wastage to a minimum. For example, the kitchens operate on a just-in-time basis resulting in monitoring consumption and adjusting the serving pace to match actual consumption during events.

✅ We will be committing to 20% plant-based meals, 50% vegetarian, 30% meat/fish, and only white meat at the conference. We will also be reducing chocolate and cheese in our menu choices.

✅ Suntec has conscientiously selected environmentally friendly packaging for packed meal sets, Kai-Mei meals.

Printing

Event Guide

✅ Our event guide will be printed on sustainable or recycled paper, and we are making reductions to the number of pages. The event guide will be made available on our event app, resulting in fewer printed copies being made available on site.

Signage

✅ Suntec’s integrated In-Centre Digital Screens significantly reduces the need for physical signage production such as room signage, directional signage and promotional banners, meaning that we will be able to prioritise using digital signage. Where printed signage is needed, we will work with our suppliers to find the most sustainable materials.

Posters

✅ We will be using ePoster screens at the event to save on printing and waste.

Waste

✅ We will be collecting lanyards after the event to recycle for future years. We will also be reusing our lanyards from 2024. Any additional lanyards that are needed will be made from eco-friendly materials.

✅ We will be reducing or restricting handouts, pens, and notepads at the event.

✅ All waste at Suntec is scrupulously collected, separated and recycled.

CSR/Charities

✅ We are looking to partner with a local community group or charity for our Opening Ceremony.

✅ We will be reviewing food bank options with the venue, as well as other charity or community initiatives that we should support during the event.
