V3: I-PASS: the key to safe and reliable handovers

Communication failures contribute to over half of sentinel events. Implementing structured communication can significantly enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency. I-PASS is a tool designed to structure communication effectively.

This session will introduce the five steps of the I-PASS tool, followed by a workshop on its practical application. Additionally, we will share experiences from implementing I-PASS and present results and lessons learned from a Breakthrough Collaborative involving eight hospitals in Switzerland.

Participants will also have the opportunity to practice assessing compliance with I-PASS in groups by evaluating two videos using an observation tool.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

• Describe the I-PASS tool and concept
• Understand the success factors for the implementation of I-PASS
• Suggest an implementation strategy for I-PASS
