Merope Mills is a senior editor at the Guardian where she has worked for several decades. After publicly telling the story of her daughter’s death in the Guardian on on the BBC and campaigning for the introduction of Martha’s Rule – which allows patients and families to escalate their care if they feel something is going wrong – she won a Women of the Year award and was named one of Good Housekeeping’s Women of the Year in 2023. She was 12th on the Independent’s list of 50 most influential women in 2024. Martha’s Rule has been described as having a ‘transformative effect’ on the NHS.
