PART ONE: In the pursuit of health equity: Co-designing, delivering, and measuring IHI’s first global pursuing equity collaborative

Pursuing Equity is a collaborative program designed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement to foster systemic action by health systems to achieve improvements in equity and racial justice efforts. In this session, attendees will learn about the delivery and results of the third iteration of the program which ran for 18 months, included 70 teams, four countries, and introduced a two-track model for participants. We will review the design and curriculum which can be adapted for hospital systems, academic medical centres, and government and public health institutions. Specifically, we will share the challenges the team experienced when scaling up the program and how we measured progress towards improving health equity clinical outcomes from 70 teams.

In this session, participants will:

  • Identify several key characteristics needed to develop a curriculum that is translational in a global equity collaborative

  • Understand and successfully tackle the nuanced challenges of significantly scaling up a program across three iterations

  • Recognize key strategies to track, measure, and sustain progress in improving health equity clinical outcomes from global team at scales

PART TWO: Addressing racial inequalities in maternal and neonatal care in England – outcomes from the RHO & IHI Learning and Action Network

Join the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and NHS Race and Health Observatory to learn how to address racial inequalities in maternal and neonatal health. A Learning and Action Network was recently completed across ten teams in England that focused on four clinical areas: preterm birth, post-partum haemorrhage, gestational diabetes, and perinatal mental health. You will hear from an expert panel of LAN participants and coaches and take away practical tips on how to take forward improvement in maternal and neonatal care with an equity lens.

In this session, participants will:

  • Utilise and apply theory of change to tackle racial inequalities in maternal and neonatal health

  • Apply tested changes to their own contexts to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes

  • Share and apply anti-racist principles to quality improvement initiatives and day-to-day practices
