K4: Human performance perfected. Saving lives made easy: how to revolutionise healthcare

Thursday 9 September | 15:30-16:30

Format: Keynote

Stream: Building Capability and Leadership

Content filters:  For those new to quality improvement

There is a better way. We believe that we can improve the culture within our health organisations and reduce preventable patient deaths. It is surprisingly simple and starts with a paradigm shift in thinking. At the core of every management decision, patient interaction, procedure and handover lies the machine that we call a human. Human performance and teamwork can be enhanced with simple measures and a few days of training. When human factors science is integrated into every standard we write and every protocol we issue, the trajectory of healthcare can be altered towards a safer outcome for our patients and a far more pleasant and engaging workplace for our staff.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • See how human factors science blends with healthcare at all levels
  • Appreciate some models for changing systems thinking and design
  • Take real ideas back to their workplaces to effect positive change
