James Won
Human Factors Program Manager for the Center for Healthcare Quality and Analytics, Children’s Hospital; Philadelphia
James Won is the Human Factors Engineering Program Manager for the Center for Healthcare Quality and Analytics (CHQA) and Senior Fellow at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), and Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Perelman School of Medicine and the School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Won has a broad background in human factor engineering, encompassing the industries of aviation, intelligence and surveillance, and missile defense. His specific expertise in socio-technical systems, cognitive workload, situational awareness, and teamwork and team performance contributed to executing a variety of projects to support government research efforts. His prior research involved applications of human factors engineering to assist in the progression of a safe and efficient national airspace system (NAS) for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Since transitioning into healthcare, he has been able to take many of these experiences and translate them to hospital and outpatient care settings. He has participated in a Pew Research Foundation grant examining the effect of electronic health record (EHR) usability on patient safety, and is currently a co-investigator on an AHRQ R18-funded Patient Safety Learning Lab to examine the impact of alarm fatigue on patient safety and a National Science Foundation grant to improve alarms in clinical settings. In addition, his current operational work spans across a wide variety of initiatives within CHOP, with the goal of implementing human factors engineering in the collective journey to high reliability and effective, safe patient care. He also serves as an assistant pastor of a campus based church at the University of Pennsylvania, and lives in the greater Philadelphia area with his wife Susie and three children, Ezra, Eunice, and Joanna.
