W9: How a learning system improves workplace wellbeing: lessons from 8 UK hospitals

Monday 15 May | 13:30-16:15

Format: Half day workshop
Stream: Improvement methods

The Bedside Learning Coordinator role was originally created as part of the learning health system approach embedded at the NHS Nightingale Hospital London during the first wave of COVID-19. The function of the role is to capture staff insights to improve patient care, workplace efficiency and staff wellbeing.

Our interactive workshop will demonstrate how NHS trusts across England are turning this from a pandemic response to business as usual. With a deep dive on two of our eight sites, delegates will learn about the impact this has had, and will have access a toolkit developed to support implementation.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe a learning health system approach and how the Bedside Learning Coordinator (BLC) role can be used to apply agile learning and improvement

  • Hear practical examples and lessons learned from healthcare organisations who have embedded the role, seen its impact on patient care and workplace wellbeing, and its potential across a range of health and care settings

  • Discuss implications for how the role works in practice and use our toolkit to support implementation of the role within their own organisation
