John is UK and nurse lead of the EU Horizon 2020 funded ‘Nightingale’ programme developing wireless, wearable systems to identify and escalate clinical deterioration. He was a pioneer of Critical Care Outreach, first Chair of the National Outreach Forum, Lead for Critical Care Outreach at the Department of Health Modernisation Agency, and is Immediate Past President of the International Society for Rapid Response Systems. John was Clinical Lead – for Deterioration, and Sepsis – of UCL Partners Patient Safety Collaborative (2010-17); cardiac arrests and mortality were significantly reduced across the region with continuous measurement, analysis of human factors, and quality improvement. He was co-investigator on recent NIHR studies ‘to reduce mortality from in-hospital cardiac arrest’, and was named one of “100 Outstanding Nurses” by the We Nurses group in 2019.
