Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Director for Quality Improvement, Somerset NHS FT; England

Dr Mike Walburn is a Consultant Anaesthetist and is Associate Medical Director for Quality Improvement at Somerset NHS FT. He has been a Consultant Anaesthetist since 2001 and specialises in care of children and patients undergoing spinal surgery. When he is not working clinically, Mike leads the trust’s quality improvement agenda where he has led the design of a QI, project management and benefits realisation infrastructure and embedded this within the trust. Mike trained as an Improvement Advisor with the IHI in Harvard, USA in 2012-13. He is especially passionate about keeping QI simple so that all colleagues can engage in a culture of improvement. The team have been successful in teaching, coaching and spreading quality improvement methodology.
