Within health care, safety needs to become how we go about normal work, not something extra we do in order to make normal work safe. We will cover how we are trying to positively influence a safety culture in the New Zealand health and disability sector by:

  • Focussing nationally on how to build a resilient healthcare system in New Zealand (Safety-I and Safety-II)

  • Improving capability regarding a human factors-based learning review and use of restorative practice principles

  • Direct engagement with health sector staff and what they can do within their personal sphere of influence to contribute to building a safety culture in their organisation

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the New Zealand approach to resilient healthcare (Safety-I and Safety-II)

  • Understand the application of a human factor learning review

  • Understand the principles of restorative practice in a patient safety framework

  • Understand how to motivate health sector staff to contribute to building a safety culture in their organisation
