C8: Community development: a holistic approach for a community in recovery
Thursday 11 April 2024 | 15:00-16:00
Format: Workshop
Stream: Populations
Content filters: Features discussion of community led projects, including those outside of health and care
This session aims to discuss why community building is an essential in rebuilding trust following a disaster, and how this can positively impact and improve collective and individual health and wellbeing. We’ll look at the approach and role of statutory services, and the need to develop a cohesive, local model that is bespoke for the community it serves.
Using experience from the Lancaster West Neighbourhood Team, formed after the Grenfell Tragedy in 2018, and focusing specifically on the community development strategy, we’ll consider the influence of community networks and lessons learnt, including reflections from partners and residents of Lancaster West Estate.
As a result of this session, participants will be able to:
- Consider approaches to rebuilding trust and empowering a traumatised community
- Why doing “with” is more important than doing things “to” people – and discussing how communities can take a lead in creating positive change within their neighbourhood, including different roles and support required to promote progress
- Identify a model that can transform public services for maximum impact for individuals and collectively at a community level
