Efforts to advance health and well-being across organizations, health systems, and communities may include many individual projects, while aligned to a common mission, may have limited reach. Impact at the system level requires an intentional and rigorous design for promising projects to navigate the path from concept to prototypes to full scale programmes, adapting to different contexts along the way. In this workshop, we will share the phases and common elements of scale up and spread frameworks, the key components that promote spread, and the implementation designs that map to each phase of the journey. We will discuss the barriers and enablers of scale and spread, grounding scale up theory in practical examples from experienced faculty. Participants will have the opportunity to try out concepts and tools that can be used to design scale up and spread in their own improvement contexts.

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Understand and identify the key components of the scale up and spread pathways


• Describe and discuss common barriers facing efforts to scale and spread improvement work beyond the pilot or single programme phase


• Apply tools to support scale up and spread to participants’ improvement contexts in their health systems and communities
