Patient safety expert, physician-scientist and international leader in patient safety and health services research, and in the measuring and improving the quality of health care. He is widely recognized as a research methodologist and epidemiologist for both health services and patient-centered outcomes research and as a leading thinker about how to produce generalizable knowledge from community engaged research. He helped author the Team Training program TeamSTEPPS, focusing on developing a culture of safety to sustain staff. His work has shown that to get results, health care organizations must identify and remove the barriers that prevent clinicians from taking these steps and fostering a culture in which staff feel safe questioning colleagues who don’t follow the protocol. He advises several governments and international professional bodies regarding staff and patient safety issues. He has published 200 papers, 5 books and given over 400 invited talks including over 50 keynotes. He served as Editor of BMJ Safety and Quality.
