L3: Deteriorating patients: improving response in a paediatric setting

Tuesday 16 May | 12:30-13:00

Format: Presentation
Stream: Safety
Content filters: Features discussion of improvement methodology

Timely and effective recognition and response to a patient’s deterioration are vital factors affecting the outcome and experience of these patients (and families). This requires a multifaceted coordinated response grounded in expert clinical judgement and high-quality patient information describing baseline data and trends.

This programme is designed with key drivers: human behaviour & thinking, digital infrastructure and organisational structure & processes. Key considerations include how to reduce unwarranted variation while allowing warranted variation, especially in terms of clinician/nursing judgement.

In this session a paediatric hospital from London will share experiences from establishing a collaborative and engaging programme of work.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Contextualise designing a programme of work that incorporates drive, engagement and input of a wide variety of stakeholders, with a key focus on high quality patient outcomes and experiences

  • Gain insight and learning from testing a variety of education, technological and environmental interventions

  • Appreciate the sensitivities and value of co-design with patients and families

  • Understand how quality improvement methodology and tools can be applied
