W4: The patient’s voice matters: improving healthcare by engaging patients and carers

Monday 15 May | 09:00-12:30

Format: Half day workshop
Stream: Person and Family-Centred Care
Content filters: Co-presented with patients, service users or carers

Patients who are deeply involved in their care have better clinical outcomes than passive patients. Even patients who cannot advocate for themselves, but whose loved ones are involved achieve clinical benefits. This has been documented in numerous studies. “Nothing about me without me” is a guiding principle for engaged patients, but this can be a challenge for the healthcare providers. This workshop will inspire participants with ideas and methods to improve their organizations’ capacity for patient engagement. The workshop is led by patient advocates from the US, UK and Denmark with contributions from President Emerita of IHI, Maureen Bisognano, and several doctors from Denmark. Advocates from the United States and United Kingdom will share how to engage patients at all levels of health including conferences like this one. A patient advocate and two doctors from Denmark will present patient storytelling as a means for training medical professionals in patient communication. All the presenters will make the case for Shared Decision Making – what it is, why it matters and how to set about implementation. This session will be packed full of ways to engage patients as true partners.
